COVID-19 Trends 07/24/2020
It’s been a while. I update the charts every day, but with everything going on in life, sitting down to write takes a back seat. Today’s update will look a little different. I’m going to swing through where each state is on their Case and Death trends, just to illustrate how different we are across the country. I’ll still circle into some Texas focused elements at the end. Promise.

So, that’s all 50 states. More headed up than headed down. And when I show you this full US view, you can see how we have dwarfed the original peak on the virus, and you can see deaths starting to tick up as well, with deaths increasing each week for the past four.

When we look at the states over the past 7 days, you can see where the hot spots are.
- Focusing on the positive test rate, Arizona (24.74%), Mississippi (21.88%), and Alabama (19.61%) are the highest. Texas is there at number 9 with 13.64%
- On cases in the past 7 days per 10k residents, Florida (34.95), Louisiana (32.58), and Mississippi (29.42) are the highest. Texas is at number 10 with 21.86
- Deaths per 10k over the past 7 days, it’s Arizona (0.769), Delaware (0.585), and South Carolina (0.561). Texas is at number 8 with 0.345, and also has the highest overall deaths over the past week with 1,000.

If you look at the full course of the pandemic on a per capita basis, Texas sits at 40th on testing per 10k, 17th on cases per 10k (a huge jump), and 32nd in deaths per 10k.

There are now just three Texas counties that have not seen a COVID case.
- 8 Counties have more than 10,000 cases
- 46 Counties have more than 1,000 cases
- 155 Counties have more than 100 cases
- 9 Counties have lost more than 100 Texans
- 59 Counties have lost more than 10 Texans
- 166 Counties have lost at least 1 Texan to COVID

For the first time in weeks, the % change in testing is greater than the % change in new cases. That’s a good thing. But you also see the graph in the lower right hand corner head up sharply. That’s daily deaths. That isn’t good, and we have lost 1,000 Texans in 7 days, 782 in the 7 days before that.

Here are the trend lines of the 24 counties in Texas with the most COVID cases. Take a look and I’ll give you my interpretation below.

Some of the biggest counties in Texas are seeing a slight downturn in cases. That’s also a good thing. The timing is likely tied to Governor Abbott’s mask mandate on July 2nd, and local leadership implementing stricter guidelines in certain communities. But it’s just a slight downturn. And there are counties (big and small) all over the state where they are not taking it seriously, not enforcing or encouraging, and in some cases flat out mocking wearing a mask, as well as the need for social distancing or other safety measures. That is why we see cases maintaining this level. That’s why we see hospitals around the state being overwhelmed. That’s why we see deaths going up. You don’t get ahead of the virus unless everyone works together. We’ve got people actively working against us. And then we have the insanity of trying to put thousands of kids and teachers into classrooms in a matter of weeks.
As always, I’ll keep updating things daily on the site, even if I’m not posting here. I believe people need to see the numbers at all levels to really understand things. Hopefully a few of you out there find this useful. Please feel free to grab screenshots from here or the actual dashboards and share them anywhere you can.
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom.
Stay in if you can. Stay safe. And by all means, WEAR A MASK!
